AI-generated image abuse and deepfakes: lived-experience
Overview
The Criminal Justice Committee wants to hear from people who have been affected by AI-generated intimate image abuse or deepfake pornography.
This may include people who have had an image of themselves created, altered or manipulated by AI and shared without their consent.
The Committee understands that this can be a sensitive and distressing subject. Hearing directly from people with lived experience will help the Committee understand how these harms affect people's lives and whether current laws, services and criminal justice responses are working effectively.
You do not need to answer every question and can share as much or as little information as you feel comfortable providing. You may also choose whether your response is published, published anonymously or treated as confidential.
Anonymous and confidential responses
When submitting a response, you will be able to indicate whether your response may be published, and if you would like your response to be published anonymously.
You can also request that your response is treated as confidential. Confidential responses would be considered by the Committee but would not be published. Please contact the clerks at criminaljustice.committee@parliament.scot before submitting your response if you would like to request this.
Questions in this call for views
- Please tell us about your experience of AI-generated intimate images, deepfakes or related forms of image-based abuse. (You may wish to describe what happened, how you became aware of it, and any actions you took in response.)
- What impact did this experience have on you? (You may wish to describe any personal, social, educational, professional, financial or other effects. If there was no significant impact, you are welcome to tell us that too.)
- Based on your experience, is there anything that would have been helpful before, during or after the events you have described? (This might relate to information, advice, support, reporting processes, responses from organisations, or any other matter that you consider relevant.)
Stakeholder and expert call for views
If you are responding on behalf of an organisation, professional body, academic institution or service provider, please respond to our separate organisational call for views.

What falls outside the scope of the inquiry?
The Committee is not carrying out a wider review of artificial intelligence, social media or online harms generally.
The Committee cannot investigate individual cases, reopen decisions made by police, prosecutors or courts, intervene in legal proceedings, or provide legal advice.
Please do not include personal information about identifiable individuals.
How your evidence will be used
The Committee will use the information provided to inform its scrutiny and any conclusions or recommendations it may make. Where confidential evidence is used, any references to it will be anonymised and no identifying details will be published.
Accessibility and support
If you would like to respond in a different format or require support to take part, please contact the Committee clerks at criminaljustice.committee@parliament.scot.
If discussing these issues causes distress, you may wish to seek support from an appropriate support organisation or trusted source of support.
Responses received will help inform the Committee's consideration of victim experiences, reporting pathways and criminal justice responses, and will contribute to its further evidence sessions in early 2027.
The call for views closes on 11 January 2027.
