I am a member of the Lanarkshire Guitar and Mandolin Association, which provides tuition and instruments for both children and adults in the area and performs in a number of concerts each year.
Through my membership of this organisation, I have developed new musical skills, enjoyed a vibrant social network of fellow musicians and been given the opportunity to perform locally and overseas. I am retired and it is well recognised that a happy and healthy retirement is more likely for those who maintain social contacts.
I am, however, living in Glasgow, so participation does require significant travelling to and from rehearsals.

We are supported in our activities by local churches, notably Moncreiff Parish Church and Trinity Church in Hamilton. Without the support of these churches in providing rehearsal space and hosting our concerts, it is unlikely that the organisation could continue to be as successful as it has been for the past 20+ years.
The organisation has provided opportunities for local young people to excel in their musical performance, with a number going on to study music at degree level and to become professional musicians.
Nevertheless, financing the initiatives to expand the number of young players accessing this wonderful opportunity has become really difficult in the past 3-4 years and local or central government support for this would make a huge difference to what the organisation can achieve.
