Are there any immediate issues unique to remote and rural communities which the National Centre will need to focus on to improve primary and community care in these areas?

Please use this textbox to provide your answer
There appears to be a lack of effective access to training in practical clinical skills for staff in remote areas. I have been involved in trying to ensure that a child with complex needs has inclusion in education when the support worker in her school changed leaving no one with the skills required for her care and safety. There may be eLearning modules that can be accessed as general training but there is no approved method for the staff to be assessed and certified as proficient in providing safe care. This denies the child and her family the experience of GIRFEC and adversely affects their wellbeing and quality of life. I think there is a need to focus on the impact of centralising specialist health services on remote and rural healthcare teams and service users. I believe that those who are fortunate to practise their specialist skills must have responsibility to ensure that the interventions they recommend include the measures required to put these interventions into use with appropriate training for practitioners as well as parents/carers and supervision or assessment of local trainers.

Are there any issues which the National Centre will be unable to address, which may require further policy action from the Government?

Please use this textbox to provide your answer
Reliable transport for patients who are required to travel long or difficult journeys for clinical care - reliable ferries, airport-to-hospital transport and subsistence allowances if required and a help line to support them in unfamiliar environments

What would you like to see included in the Scottish Government’s forthcoming Remote and Rural Workforce Strategy?

Consideration of peripatetic educational supervisors for clinical practitioners

What specific workforce related issues should the strategy look to resolve?

Please use this textbox to provide your answer
Planned cover for periods of leave for remote area workers
Recognition of the need for protected time for learning and inclusion in professional activities
Exposure of students and trainees to work in remote and rural settings

Are there any workforce-related issues which the creation of a Remote and Rural Workforce Strategy alone will not address. If so, what are these issues and what additional action may be required to address them?

Inclusion in curricula for all healthcare staff at undergraduate or junior trainee stages, recognition of the specific challenges and solutions by academic departments
A need for independent patient advocacy
