My wife experienced care both at home and in care homes, both council run and privately run.
The private care home into which she was places by Fife Council Social Care Dept. was very poor due to poor management, low staff levels and poor design and build of the building,
The Social Care worker did not give us any backing with our complaints and at a meeting with the management of the home, the word 'sorry' never crossed anyone's lips. However my wife was quickly moved to a Fife Council Care Home where care and treatment was excellent.
The only problem to arise was the considerable time taken to set up a care package for her to return home. This only progressed after contact was made with our local MP and the matter being taken to the highest level of the Social Work dept.
This caused unnecessarily bed blocking.
The care package and medical attention that was given was excellent and made her live reasonably comfortable until her death 11 months later.
The cooperation between Social Care Worker, the one who took over the case, occupational therapist, physical therapist, podiatrist, doctor and district nurses was impressive.

The system requires to be streamlined . Considering the experience gained bt social workers, it should be easy to assess the requirements of a client.
It should not then be necessary for these proposals to be approved by a committee.
It should also not be necessary for the department to then ask Care Providing Companies to tender for this provision. The Council already know what these companies charge for services.
I know of other families who have had or are experiencing the frustration and worry caused by the present system.

At the moment it is take it or leave it and it takes far too long for a case to go through the system.
If a client requires a care package it should not be up to a committee or official to scutinise the application.
